Level 1 LinkedIn Post Use

Level 1 means that you are not on LinkedIn (go check out this post about that). Or it could mean that you have LinkedIn, put just don’t actively engage on there.

Don’t get me wrong – you could be silent on the LinkedIn timeline, but a savage in those LinkedIn chats. However, I’ve come to learn those that aren’t as active on LinkedIn post tend not to be engaging on the platform altogether. Not being active on LinkedIn simply means that you are not utilizing all the tools at your disposal to foster the growth of your personal and professional brands.

Level 2 LinkedIn Post Use

Level 2 of LinkedIn post use, tends to happen when you stop caring about how many people are going to react to your post. I’ll just say it here, drop your ego and start sharing. So what, no one reacted to your first post – no one reacted to mine. The point is if you don’t make that first post, you sure aren’t going o make that 100th post that will be so valuable to the public health LinkedIn community.

Level 2 is typically:

  • You post something from a source & don’t have add your two cents
  • You repost a LinkedIn post from an individual & don’t add your two cents
  • You repost a LinkedIn post from an organization & don’t add your two cents

This is great that you are sharing potentially relevant information. But what about that information made you want to share it? That’s a simple question to ask yourself to level up to level 3 or level 4 of LinkedIn post use. Level 2 is usually when you are starting to get comfortable with reposting others but without a real call to action or sharing your valuable insights along with the repost.

Level 3 LinkedIn Post Use

Level 3 LinkedIn Post Use is similar to level 2, however here you are adding some sort of caption. Usually this is very short and not very expansive from what the original post says.

You typically see this when people caption, “This,” “Great post,” “I enjoyed this read,” “Check this out,” etc.

Like my post above, I repost some other content and give my two cents. However that two cents is of no real value add to the content I posted. If I wanted to make it more powerful and level it up, I could have asked a question as well or just make my caption something of value.

If you want to level this up, then you could add your short caption and also add a question to seek out others perspective on the matter. For e.g., “Great post. Do you think the governments stance on X will be more harmful or helpful to the overall public health funding?”

Level 4 LinkedIn Post Use

LinkedIn level 4 of post use is all about sharing more of your insights. This could be dropping some insights from things that you learnt. It could even be you giving insights into your situation and then soliciting advice from the LinkedIn community. Additionally, you can also be at this level from reposting someone else’s work and adding a substantive caption that gives your in-depth thoughts or insights around the post. Depending on the level of depth, this can also be considered to be on Level 5.

This level also includes using polls to ask your connection and LinkedIn at large – the great thing about polls is that not only do your connections see them, but the larger LinkedIn community comes across it and is able to take part. Additionally, if your poll is that interesting there is the option for people to follow along to see what the results are when it’s completed.

Level 5 LinkedIn Post Use

Level 5 of LinkedIn post use is all about utilizing what no one else is posting on LinkedIn.

There are over 700 million active users on LinkedIn, however only around 2% post any sort of content. And the majority of this 2% is not posting videos but rather graphics or text.

I would reserve level 5 of LinkedIn Post Use to the most sort of engaging content:

  • Sharing video content with a meaningful caption
  • Creating a LinkedIn article (The LinkedIn algorithm loves these)
  • Sharing high level post with great insights or questions to help others
  • Going live on LinkedIn

Another feature that isn’t a post that is heavily underutilized on LinkedIn is the use of the story function.

Summary

Though you may be posting on LinkedIn, the post you are making might not be as impactful as you would like them to be. LinkedIn is the place to be to start or to continue building your professional brand. As I stated, only a minority of LinkedIn users actually use the platform to post content which provides a tremendous opportunity for you!

These 5 levels of LinkedIn post use are sure to help you public health students and professionals get more out of LinkedIn in the coming week, months, and years.

I’ll be looking for more post from you all soon! Share those insights and ask those questions. Just remember to keep adding your two cents to the larger conversation. Be consistent and people will start to pay attention.
