Episode 11 of Public Health Careers
In this episode Frances Dean, BSHP, MSWc, MPHc talks us through her public health journey this far. She began her journey as a pre-nursing major before switching over to health promotion while studying at the University of Georgia. She did this after doing a study abroad in Italy where she realized she wanted to do more that she likes the combination of research + direct practice – which is a more interdisciplinary approach than just giving direct care. She has had fantastic undergraduate internships such as Project Imhotep at the Moorehouse College and as a CDC Undergraduate Public Health Scholar (CUPS).
Frances says that through Project Imhotep it led her onto the other opportunities such as CUPS where she worked with the Office of Minority Health and Health Equity. She has also had a Summer Research Internship with the National Institute of Health (NIH). Frances has also been able to become a SMART Scholar with the Department of Defense (DoD) which covers her tuition and fees and gets to work for the DoD after her degree is finished.
Frances has also started her own business to help with technical writing at Create, Critique, & Revise Wizard LLC. She started this to make some side income after she got many request to help people with application materials sushi as resumes and cover letters. Frances also has this Public Health Wonder Document where you can find many opportunities to take your career to the next level.
Frances will pursue dual degree in Masters of Public Health and Masters of Social Work at the University of Michigan in the Fall. Check out this episode if you want to learn more about what you can get out of a government opportunities in undergraduate and how to make the most out of them.
