Episode 34 of Public Health Careers

Winston Wellington Wright is a health equity and community empowerment nerd with a passion for learning. He currently works as a David A. Gee Administrative Fellow at Barnes-Jewish Hospital.

He got his Bachelors of Arts in General Biology at Fisk University. He was able to work as a student volunteer at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Winston then went on to complete his Master of Public Health at Morehouse School of Medicine with an interest in management and health administration. He was able to become a Regional Student Liaison for the American Public Health Association (APHA). He also was a student volunteer at the Atlanta Community Food Bank which was a fundamental experience in him understanding. Through the Institute for Diversity and Equity Summer Enrichment Program, Winston was able to get matched with the Administrative Internship for the Duke University Health System.

Then he went on to an Emerging Leader professional development program via FOCUS St. Louis. He talks about the importance of how this leadership development allowed him to mould his leadership perspectives. Winston was then a Board Member for the Education Board at APHA.

Winston speaks extensively about the experience of his David A. Gee Administrative Fellowship – from the getting in contact with current fellows, to the interview process to his experience as a fellow. He drops invaluable information for those interested in working in health systems as a public health professional and especially as a black male.
