Episode 12 of Public Health Careers
In this episode, I chat with Eva James, Bsc an Australian public health professional. We begin talking about her growing up in a small town in North New South Wales in Australia. She was never really into school until she had a health teacher towards her end of Highschool where Eva was introduced to the social determinants of health, health care systems, and other topics. This inspired her to pursue a Bachelors in Health Science and Health Promotion at University of Queensland. Though she began undergrad wanting to go to medical school, her focus shifted to prevention and population health and made her want to pursue a career in public health.
Eva shares about her experiences in as a project intern at Queensland Aboriginal and Islander Health Council and as an administration officer. Though she began her career in a more administrative role, taking this position she believes allowed her to secure her next role and first real job in public health as a Health Promotion Officer at Queensland Health. Eva then worked and applied to a Senior Health Promotion Officer after having gained experience, better understanding the role, and networking.
Eva then switched out of the Australian government (Queensland Health) to an Australian non-profit, Healthy North Coasts where she works as a Population Health Coordinator. She wanted this change as it is a new position which allowed her to mold it into her own. Eva only recently began this position 3 months ago and is enjoying it thus far.
Furthermore, Eva has created the platform ThePublicHealthNerd.com to share more resources and mentor other public health professionals. Be sure to check out this episode to hear all of the tips and insights Eva shares with us.
